Why Isn’t My Website Ranking? 8 Real Reasons (and How to Fix Each One)

You’ve published pages, maybe hired someone, maybe even followed a checklist off a blog somewhere and your website is still stuck on page 2, or nowhere at all. “Why isn’t my website ranking” is one of the most searched, most frustrated queries in SEO, and most of the answers online are either too generic (“create quality content”) or too technical to act on. This is the diagnostic order we actually use when a client asks us this exact question.

Why my site is not ranking

1. Your page isn’t actually indexed

Before anything else: open Google Search Console, go to URL Inspection, and paste the exact URL. If it says “URL is not on Google,” none of your content, backlinks, or keyword choices matter yet Google hasn’t added the page to its index, so it cannot rank for anything.

Common causes: a stray noindex tag, the page blocked in robots.txt, a canonical tag pointing to a different URL, or a page that’s simply too new or too thin for Google to have crawled it yet.

  • Fix: request indexing manually inside Search Console once the blocker is removed.
  • Fix: if the site is new, build a handful of internal links to the page so Google’s crawler can actually find it.

2. Technical SEO is silently blocking you

A page can be indexed and still be held back by technical issues: slow load speed, poor Core Web Vitals (especially Largest Contentful Paint on mobile), broken mobile rendering, or duplicate content across similar URLs. These don’t stop indexing they cap how well an otherwise good page can perform.

  • Run PageSpeed Insights on the exact URL, not the homepage.
  • Check mobile rendering separately from desktop Google uses mobile-first indexing.
  • Look for duplicate/near-duplicate pages competing with each other for the same keyword (keyword cannibalization).

3. Your content doesn’t match search intent

This is the single most common reason a genuinely well-written page doesn’t rank. Open the keyword in an incognito tab and look at what’s actually ranking in the top 5 not what you assume should rank. If every result is a comparison table and your page is a long narrative post, Google has already told you what format it wants for that query, and no amount of on-page optimization fixes a format mismatch.

  • Match the format: list, comparison, definition, tool, or long-form guide whichever the top 5 are actually using.
  • Match the depth: if competitors cover 8 sub-topics and you cover 3, you’re structurally thinner, regardless of word count.

4. Your backlink profile is thin next to page 1

For competitive keywords, content quality alone rarely closes the gap. Check referring domains (not just total backlinks) for your page against the top 3 ranking URLs using any free backlink checker. A large gap in referring domains explains a ranking gap that no further content editing will fix.

  • Fix: earn links through original data, tools, or genuinely citable resources not directory submissions, which carry little weight.
  • Fix: internal linking from your own high-authority pages passes some authority too, and it’s the one lever fully in your control.

5. You’re targeting a keyword your site can’t compete for yet

A six-month-old website with 10 backlinks is not going to outrank a decade-old domain with thousands of referring domains for a head term like “digital marketing agency.” That’s not a content problem it’s an authority mismatch. Reframe the goal: build authority on realistic long-tail and mid-competition terms first, then move up.

6. A recent algorithm update moved the goalposts

If a page that ranked well suddenly dropped, check the date against Google’s confirmed core update rollouts. Core updates re-evaluate content quality and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) site-wide, and recoveries when they happen typically take another full update cycle, not days.

7. AI Overviews and AI search are eating clicks even when you “rank”

Increasingly, ranking #1 no longer guarantees traffic the way it did a few years ago AI-generated overviews answer a growing share of queries directly in the results page. This isn’t a reason to abandon SEO; it’s a reason to also structure content so it can be cited by AI answers directly (clear definitions, structured data, direct answers near the top of the page), not only optimized for the traditional blue-link ranking.

8. Sometimes it isn’t an SEO problem at all

Google’s own Search Advocate John Mueller has said plainly that sometimes there is no SEO fix if the underlying product, offer, or market has moved on, a technically perfect page still won’t earn rankings or clicks. Before spending more budget on SEO, it’s worth asking honestly whether the page is answering a question people are still actually asking.

Why Isn't My Website Ranking

How to use this diagnostic order

Work top to bottom, not in whatever order feels most interesting. Indexing gates everything; if a page isn’t indexed, a backlink campaign is wasted effort. Technical health gates content performance; a slow page under-performs even with perfect content. Only once indexing and technical health are confirmed clean does the content-vs-intent and backlink-gap analysis actually tell you anything reliable.

If your rankings involve a local business

Local ranking factors Google Business Profile optimization, citation consistency, and location-specific content sit on top of everything above and are their own diagnostic. We’ve written a dedicated breakdown of this in our local SEO guide, which is worth reading alongside this one if your traffic depends on a specific city or service area.

When to fix it yourself vs. when to get it audited

The indexing check, PageSpeed check, and intent comparison in this article take under 30 minutes and don’t require any paid tools do these yourself first. Backlink-gap analysis, algorithm-update impact assessment, and E-E-A-T evaluation require paid tools and pattern recognition across many sites, which is where a structured audit earns its cost.

If you’ve been through the checklist above and are still stuck, our SEO services team runs a full ranking audit covering indexing, technical health, content-intent match, and backlink-gap analysis against your actual competitors not generic benchmarks. You can get in touch here to start with a conversation, not a sales pitch.
